Currently, we are experiencing a pandemic that history has not seen before. Although we are being told to quarantine ourselves, not many are following that as a guideline. Access to safe-sex supplies is already a struggle for many people. Due to COVID-19, this struggle only increases. We as people continuously hear about keeping ourselves and our spaces clean during a pandemic, yet are rarely discussing how sexual health and intimacy fit into these conversations. So, what can sex educators do to help?
The We Won't Be Silenced (WWBS) campaign will be helping during this time by delivering safe-sex supplies to folks in Rhode Island. This will be done by mailing it out or dropping it off to maintain social distancing. If you're in need, DM us @wwbscampaign on Instagram or E-Mail us at wewontbesilencedcampaign@gmail.com!
As of right now, there's no clear evidence showing that COVID-19 is transmitted sexually. What we do know is that the virus attacks mucus membranes (nose, mouth, eyes..) Since we are supposed to be "six feet apart" from one another, it's likely to transmit the virus regardless of sexual secretions (vaginal secretions, semen..) if you've been in contact with someone who is positive for the virus.
Social distancing is key to not spreading COVID-19. I tend to hear people questioning the likelihood of contracting the virus while visiting or living with a partner. If one partner is a carrier of the virus, it can most certainly spread to the other. Nonetheless, this means no sexual contact.
If comfortable, this may be a good time to learn about what you like and feel free to explore your body. If you are looking for simple, intimate moments... Facetime, call or even just text your partner to keep in contact. This way, you can still make memories while practicing social distancing.
If you do decide to engage in sexual acts, make sure that you are using protective methods and contraceptives. If you're struggling to access safe-sex supplies, birth control or UTI medication, you can visit and/or call Planned Parenthood! A provider can send your prescription to CVS pharmacy when you sign up for free delivery as well. This goes the same way for Planned Parenthood Direct. To sign-up for free CVS delivery, visit https://www.cvs.com/content/delivery. To use Planned Parenthood Direct, you can download the app on your phone from the app store!
